Overcoming Obstacles: The question isn’t who is going to let me, it’s who is going to stop me – Ayn Rand
As someone who has dedicated her life to public service and justice, I have always found inspiration in motivational quotes. They serve as a source of strength and a reminder of the potential within each of us to overcome adversity. Recently, I came across Ayn Rand’s quote: “The question isn’t who is going to let me, it’s who is going to stop me.” This quote beautifully captures the essence of resilience and the determination to push forward, no matter the obstacles.

Resilience is not just a trait; it is a way of life. It is the ability to recover from setbacks, adapt in the face of adversity, and keep moving forward. I have personally experienced my share of setbacks and adversity. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, I moved to New York City as a young woman with the dream of becoming a flight attendant. Unable to speak English and rejected by the industry, I had my first taste of many rejections. This quote reminded me of the countless moments in my career where resilience was my guiding light.
From dreaming of becoming a flight attendant to attending college while learning English and working towards my legal career, the path was never smooth. Pain, disappointment, and frustration became my constant companions. While attending college, I failed more tests and courses than I could remember. Devastated by my own insecurities and uncertainties, learning English and getting a degree appeared to be a bridge too far. However, these challenges revealed my true strength and resilience. I was not ready to give up. Not only did I overcome these obstacles, but I graduated, went to law school, became a New York State Supreme Court Justice, and a public speaker. I also set precedents that helped others in similar situations follow their dreams.
Ayn Rand’s words, “The question isn’t who is going to let me, it’s who is going to stop me,” resonate deeply because they highlight the mindset needed to thrive amidst adversity. Our barriers are often within ourselves. Shifting our focus from seeking permission to embracing our inner strength makes us unstoppable.
Reflecting on my journey, I hope to inspire others to embrace resilience. Whether facing personal challenges, professional setbacks, or societal barriers, remember that resilience is your greatest ally. Draw strength from within, lean on your support system, and keep pushing forward.
